Imagine if the Spice Girls swapped outfits.

Not reinvented themselves.
Not “evolved.”
Just… turned up wearing each other’s looks.

Baby Spice in Sporty’s tracksuit.
Posh Spice in Scary’s leopard print.
Sporty Spice in a mini dress and platforms.

Same women. Same talent. Same songs.

And yet — the magic breaks.

Nothing is wrong, exactly.
But nothing feels right either.

That’s what misaligned branding feels like.

Why this metaphor works so well

The Spice Girls weren’t famous because they were five identical pop stars.
They were famous because each member had:

  • A clear role
  • A recognisable energy
  • A distinct job in the group

You didn’t need to explain who was who. You just knew.

And the outfits weren’t decoration — they were visual shorthand for personality.

That’s the bit most businesses miss.

The real problem most businesses have

Most business owners aren’t struggling because they:

  • Aren’t talented enough
  • Don’t work hard enough
  • Haven’t taken enough courses

They’re struggling because they’re wearing the wrong outfit for who they actually are.

They’re:

  • Writing “professional” copy when they’re naturally playful
  • Posting safe content when they’re actually bold
  • Trying to sound aspirational when they’re deeply relational

They’re still singing the song — but in the wrong costume.

What “the wrong outfit” looks like in real life

This is where it clicks for people.

The wrong outfit sounds like:

  • “I don’t feel like myself online”
  • “I get enquiries, but not from my people”
  • “Everyone says my work is great, but it’s not converting”
  • “My brand looks good… but it doesn’t feel magnetic”

That’s not a visibility issue.
That’s a misalignment issue.

This isn’t about being one thing forever

Important nuance (and where this blog becomes generous, not preachy):

The Spice Girls didn’t stay frozen in time.
They evolved — within their lane.

Sporty could grow up without becoming Posh.
Scary could soften without becoming Baby.

Evolution works when it’s aligned, not when it’s a costume change.

A quick self-check for the reader

Ask yourself:

  • If someone stripped away my visuals and just read my words… would they get me?
  • Does my brand feel like something I put on, or something that fits?
  • Am I trying to sound like the version of success I admire — or the one that’s actually me?

Because clarity isn’t about choosing the best outfit.

It’s about choosing the right one.

Close with authority, not fluff

You don’t need to become louder, trendier, or more polished.

You need to stop dressing like someone you’re not.

The moment your business starts wearing the right outfit, the right people recognise you instantly.

No convincing required.
